Paint the fence – how to, step by step

Before you start painting your fence, you need to do a good preparatory work. Start by first washing the fence with, for example, an algae or mold cleaner to remove invisible spores and algae so that they do not start to grow under the paint. Allow to dry thoroughly. Feel free to place a cover cloth under the fence to protect the ground.

Wash the fence every year and the result will last longer.

Then scrape off any loose paint, hammer in any nails that stick out and sand down any sharp corners on the fence. Remember to sweep away any scraped paint so the wind doesn’t blow it up into the wet paint as you paint.

Before you start painting your fence, you need to treat the wooden clean surfaces that have emerged after scraping. Oil with an impregnating base oil and be especially careful with the end wood where moisture easily penetrates. Let dry. If the wood is really dry, you may need to apply oil twice – you need a good amount of oil, almost so that it remains on the surface. Then prime the fence with primer for wood. Use a roller for the large wooden parts, and a brush for hard-to-reach surfaces. Make sure you also prime the end wood.

Use a tray to spread the paint on the roller more easily. Then you also avoid dirt in the paint bucket.

Make sure the surface is dry when you do the first coat of top coat. Then paint one more layer. Don’t forget to paint the end wood.

Tip!

Do not paint on a warm wall or in direct sunlight – then the paint dries too quickly.
