Paint outdoor furniture – how to, step by step

If you have outdoor furniture that has previously been painted, you start by scraping or sanding off all loose paint.

Then impregnate the wood-clean scraped surfaces with base oil after scraping and sanding. If the old paint is in good condition without flakes, it is enough to wash the wood with a suitable cleaning detergent.

Are you painting untreated wood? Then you instead start by impregnating the entire outdoor furniture with oil before sanding with a fine sandpaper.

When the surfaces are clean, dry and impregnated, it is time to paint the outdoor furniture with primer. Note, however, that there are many different types of oils, primers and topcoats. How your foundation work should be carried out depends on the type of paint you use, and we therefore recommend that you ask your paint dealer for advice.

A good idea is to ask your paint store for advice to get a paint that will last for outdoor use. The choice of paint differs depending on whether the outdoor furniture is to be placed in a glazed patio, under a roof or under the open sky.

Use a flat brush and apply the paint in the same direction as the grain of the wood. Paint thinly in several layers – then the paint will not run down between the slats and boards. To get a smooth and nice final result, finish with long and light strokes over the painted surfaces. Feel free to complement your flat brush with an short angled brush that makes it easier to access between the slats of the furniture.
